    Penguin Computing Announces AMD Clustering System

    Penguin Computing Inc., the leader in world-class Linux hardware, software, and service, today announced a critical addition to its 1U server platforms, the Altus 130 server.

    The new Altus 130 was developed by Penguin Computing to directly address the needs of customers in high performance cluster computing. At the heart of the new system is the QuantiSpeed™ Architecture of the AMD Athlon MP dual processors and the AMD 760MP chipset, which are perfectly suited to the price/performance sensitive requirements of parallel computing customers.

    The Altus 130 also uses standard PC2100 DDR SDRAM and has two network-bootable 10/100 Ethernet interfaces on the motherboard to provide redundant connectivity in the base system configuration. All other peripherals on the Altus 130 are optional, including up to two cost-effective ATA-100 IDE hard drives (max system storage capacity is 200GB), various additional network connections via the open PCI slot, a slim 24x CD-Rom drive, and a 1.44 floppy drive. Customers can order only the components that their cluster installation requires, devoting more of their budget to CPUs and memory.

    The Altus 130 is also available preloaded with the Scyld Beowulf clustering operating system, and can be bundled with Penguin Computing’s Linux cluster services, which include design, installation, and performance tuning of high performance cluster systems. “High-performance parallel computing is an area that Penguin Computing is uniquely tailored for,” said Sam Ockman, CEO for Penguin Computing. “The combination of the powerful new x86-based Altus 130 platform and Penguin Computing’s expertise in Linux yield a solution that benefits cluster installations in biotech, education, and Fortune 500 companies.”
